Bariatric (Weight Loss) Surgery
Bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery) includes a variety of procedures performed on people who have obesity. Weight loss is achieved by reducing the size of the stomach with a gastric band or through removal of a portion of the stomach (sleeve gastrectomy or biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch) or by resecting and re-routing the small intestine to a small stomach pouch (gastric bypass surgery).
Obesity and its Impact
- In the past 20 years, adult obesity has doubled
- More than 300,000 annual premature deaths attributed to obesity
- 2 out of every 3 American adults are overweight
- 1 in 3 US children are overweight or obese; 75% of obese children become obese adults
- Obesity is a pandemic disease
- Once patients have developed obesity, they have less than 6% chance of being able to reach or maintain a normal BMI over their entire lifetimes
- Associated with multiple, serious medical problems
• Diabetes
• PCOS
• Infertility
• Joint pain
• Sleep apnea
• High blood pressure
• Fatty liver disease
• Premature death
